THE STYLE FILE - DYLAN MUHLENBERG

Photobucket
AGE: 28
OCCUPATION: Executive editor for GQ magazine
CITY: Cape Town

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
It’s quite weird being asked that question instead of asking it, Marco. How the tables have turned… I like the basics –khaki pants, jeans, Grasshoppers, All Stars, plain Tshirts, chambray shirts – all of which are pretty worn in and beat up. So grunge? But then considering that I wear Wayfarers and deep V necks and tight pants and a calculator casio watchmy style could probably be summed up in one word. Hipster. Shit…

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STORE/BRAND?
If it’s free it’s for me, but if I do have to take out my wallet then I usually just get a bunch of basic white T-shirts from Woolworths or some pants from Country Road. I like my stuff to look as if I’ve had it for years, so the easiest way to get this is by shopping at second-hand stores. Otherwise my brother-in-law owns astore and that family discount helps.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
Kurt Cobain because he made not having a thing a thing. Or anti-fashion fashionable. I also like the way Hunter Thompson wore the same three things – short shorts, Chuck Taylors, bucket hat – day in day out, regardless of who he was with or where he was going. Style isn’t about having a stylist play dress up with you. It’s about confidence. Attitude.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT?
I’m like a coolerbox, put some beer in me and you can take me anywhere.

WHAT IS THE WORST FASHION/GROOMING MISTAKE YOU'VE EVER MADE?
Jeesh, too many... I’ve had dreadlocks. I’ve bleached my hair. I made a pair of slip-slops out of old jeans and then actually wore them. Oversized and overly branded surfwear. Big chains. Embarrassing tattoos. But mistakes are good. You learn what works and what doesn’t, and not to take yourself or fashion too seriously.

WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE ESSENTIALS WHEN TRAVELING?
My bags often get lost so I’ve learnt not to pack things that can’t be easily replaced. Essentials would be a notebook, a novel, an iPod (all in my hand luggage), comfortable sneakers and versatile jeans that I can dress up or down.

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE IN SOMEONE ELSES BODY FOR A YEAR WHOSE WOULD IT BE?
Irina Shayk’s.

NAME A FASHION TREND/STYLE YOU LOVE BUT WOULD NEVER WEAR:
Hats. A good hat can really finish off a look something terrific. Guys like my man Donny look so good in them, but others, like me, look like we’re playing dress up.

IS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE YOU WISH YOU BOUGHT MORE OF?
My leather sandals. I spent so long looking for a pair of Jesus sandals - Berlin, Abu Dhabi, Milan – and finally found a pair at the Zara in Portugal. I’m afraid that when these are done it’s back to Havianas.

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED RELATING TO FASHION OR GROOMING?
My grandfather told me that the only thing that should be on a shirt is a pocket.
