Elijah Wood Stars in FX Comedy Series "Wilfred"

Elijah Wood stars with Jason Gann in FX’s new comedy series “Wilfred”.

The "Lord of The Rings" star takes the role of Ryan, a suicidal lawyer who sees his neighbor’s pet as a man in a shaggy-dog outfit.

It’s extremely funny but it’s also coming out of a very real place.” Wood told The Hollywood Reporter, adding “It made me laugh and also presented the opportunity to do comedy, which I’d never really done before. You’re always looking for a challenge and something different and new, so it was just an avenue that I’d never traveled down. I think I was just excited to see what would become of that.”

The series is based on 2002 short film and subsequent Australian hit series by the same name and topbilled by co- creator/actor Jason Gann as Wilfred.

Wilfred is a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking, bong-loving flea bag who decides to be Ryan’s life coach — possibly to keep him away from his owner, the beautiful Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann).

He aims to awaken Ryan’s animal instincts, but his schemes invariably get Ryan into trouble with the law.

He coerces him into breaking into the neighborhood bully’s (Ethan Suplee, “My Name is Earl”) home and stealing his pot plants.

Then each of them takes a dump in his boot.

"Wilfred" premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. on FX.
