Nargis Dutt was a legendary actress of Indian cinema, famously known for her award winning performance in Mother India (1957).

NARGIS
Fatima Rashid (who later became Nargis) was born on on 1st June 1929 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. Her mother was Jaddanbai, a singer from Allahabad and her father Uttamchand Mohanchand was a doctor from Rawalpindi. Actor Anwar Hussain was her brother.

There was a rumour about her having an affair with actor Raj Kapoor but she eventually married actor Sunil Dutt on 11th March 1958.  He was her co-star in Mother India. The couple had three children - Sanjay, Namrata, and Priya. Her son Sanjay Dutt has become a famous film actor whereas her daughter Namrata is happily married to actor Kumar Gaurav, and Priya is a politician and a Member of Parliament since 2005.

Nargis and Sunil founded the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe which brought in many singers and dancers to participate in the stage shows held at the border areas for the Indian soldiers.

She was the first patron of the NGO, Spastics Society of India, and she is well known for her active involvement in social work.

In 1980 she was nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha.

MOVIES
In 1935, Nargis appeared as a child artist in Talash-E-Haq and made her acting debut in with Tamanna (1942). Nargis has appeared in a number of movies opposite filmmaker and actor Raj Kapoor. In 25 years of her film career she has given many superhits, out of which the most famous ones are Barsaat (1949), Andaz (1949), Awaara (1951), Deedar (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956), and Mother India (1957).

In Perdesi(1957) the actress played the role of Champa opposite Prithviraj Kapoor. She was seen with husband Sunil Dutt in Yaadein (1964). In Raj Kapoor's Shree 420(1955), Nargis played the role of a poor girl Vidya opposite Raj Kapoor. Mera Juta Hai Japani is a very famous song from this movie.

Nargis won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in the blockbuster Mother India (1957) which was nominated for the Academy Award. Raat Aur Din (1967) was her last movie, it was a big hit and she earned the National Film Award for Best Actress and she was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

DEATH
Nargis died on 3rd May 1981. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was treated at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York. She was brought back to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai where she went into a coma and finally died.

In 1982, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was set up. At the annual National Film Awards ceremony, the Nargis Dutt Award is given to outstanding movies about national integration
