"Star Wars Galaxies" Bids Goodbye on December 15; To Be Replaced by "Star Wars: The Old Republic"

LucasArts and Sony Online have recently announced that they're shutting down the popular multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG), "Star Wars: Galaxies" on December 15, 2011.

But before the game ends, Sony will be encouraging players to participate in a "galaxy-ending event" which details has yet to be announced. The game is shutting down in stages. Its trading-card store has already been taken offline. 12-, 6-, and 3-month subscriptions are no longer available.

And on October 15, players will have full access as paid members to Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, EverQuest, EverQuest II, and DC Universe Online games.

In an interview with Joystiq, SOE president John Smedley said the closure was "first and foremost a business decision mutually agreed upon between SOE and LucasArts. LucasArts has a new game coming out, and the contract would be running out in 2012 anyway, so we feel like it's the right time for the game to end."

He is referring to "Star Wars: The Old Republic," which is set to launch in 2012.
